You know the drill by now, every year for the Mugello MotoGP Valentino Rossi produces a new one-off special helmet design to mark the occasion. This year, Valentino Rossi has gone for a football theme with a couple of tribute woven into the design.
This year’s Mugello helmet is a tribute to Rossi’s good friend Francesco Totti who announced his retirement from football. Totti had spent about 26 years at Roma and has just called time on his career. The helmet shows a cartoon of Valentino about to take a penalty on a football pitch, the cartoon Rossi is pictured as saying “Shall I chip it?“. This is a reference to a penalty known as a ‘paneka’ where the player chips it in over the goalkeeper. The rear of the helmet features the Italian flag with the phrase “One captain. There is only one captain” as a tribute to Totti.
The helmet also features a tribute to Nicky Hayden. Hayden sadly lost his life in a cycling incident in Italy and Rossi has merged his famous ’46’ race number with Hayden’s ’69’ race number.
