Jorge Lorenzo HJC IS-17 Angel 99 helmet

Jorge Lorenzo HJC IS-17 helmet

Jorge Lorenzo HJC IS-17 helmet

Jorge Lorenzo may not be officially sponsored by HJC helmets anymore (Lorenzo signed a 3 year deal with Shark helmets in 2016) but they still have some awesome Lorenzo replica helmets on the market. This is the Jorge Lorenzo helmet in HJC’s IS-17 range – this is an entry level range so you will be getting a good everyday road helmet for a great price (usually you will find this range priced under £/$180).

The design is kind of a tribute to Jorge Lorenzo and uses many of the logos and motifs that Lorenzo has used as regular graphical themes on his actual race helmet designs.

The design is mostly white and grey, which is unusual as Lorenzo’s helmets most often come in dark black, so this represents something of a unique design and one that stands out as being different from the norm. The rear of the helmet features Lorenzo’s ‘Spartan’ warrior helmet icon complete with Lorenzo’s race number ’99’ on the base of it. The left-hand side has Lorenzo’s long-running ’round the outside’ logo, a circled arrow with an ‘x’ in the center which is a reference to Lorenzo’s early career when he earned this nickname for some daring overtaking manouvres on the outside of various opponents. The right-hand side of the helmet displays Lorenzo’s race number surrounded by his name.

This is a clean and slick looking design and like we said previously it stands out as being more than a little different to the usual Lorenzo replica helmet designs out there on the market.

Here is the official description, and you can see our thoughts on what we made of this helmet further down the page.

Official Description:
The HJC IS-17 is constructed from an advanced polycarbonate shell which is lightweight, and thanks to the use of CAD technology offers a comfortable and superior fit. The ventilation is enhanced by an advanced channeling system which sucks the air from the front vents and flushes the heat and humidity out the rear exhaust vents. The IS-17 also comes complete with an internally fitted sun visor which can be operated by a centrally mounted slider at the top.

The RapidFire visor replacement system allows quick, tool-less removal / replacement of the visor; which is also Max Vision Pinlock ready. The IS-17 uses a double D ring retention system.

  • Advance polycarbonate shell

Our view:

The IS-17 is the successor to HJC’s IS-16, and whenever you see ‘IS’ in the HJC model name it stands for ‘Internal Sun-visor’ – and this feature is one of the selling points of this helmet. This is basically a great day-to-day road helmet that more than meets the requirements that you would hope for street riding. This is a no-frills helmet and what you get it does extremely well but don’t expect the wealth of featutres that you’d get from higher priced models.

So whats good about this helmet?:

Visor: Lets start with the visor – the visor has been upgraded and now has a center locking clasp which is sturdy and gives off a satisfying ‘clunk’ when the visor slots down and clicks into place. It feels solid when locked into the down position, and even when riding at speed it never feels like it is a risk of popping upwards. The visor also comes pinlock ready.

Sunvisor: The internal sunvisor is a really nice touch and for everyday riders it will remove the annoying task of trying to fit sunglasses on under a helmet, or switching to a tinted visor on a sunny day. It slides down smoothly via a slide control and it also has the option of 3 pre-set fixed positions.

Ventilation: Ventilation is basic but functional with chin vents and low slung chimney vents at the front of the helmet, and exhaust vents at the rear to allow for airflow and help any warm and moist air get sucked out. The inner-lining also has some cutaway sections that allow extra space for airflow, but a small complaint is that the lining can cover the vents which can be a bit annoying.

This is actually a great helmet for the price point, and you actually get a decent set of features (such as the integrated sunvisor) for a very low price point.

As usual HJC’s usually suit those riders with more round or oval head shapes and the IS-17 is no different. The shell feels sturdy enough and despite it being a Polycarbonate Compact Shell (which is usually slightly heavier) you don’t feel any stress or pain from the helmet during long rides. The field of vision you get from the helmet is great and never feels restricted. As mentioned, ventilation is basic but functional and despite the complaints that you sometimes see online regarding the ventilation system we have to say that we have never really had any real issues and find it comfortable enough to ride around with the vents only partially open.

One thing to be aware of however is that the IS-17 does not come with a Snell certification due to the internal sunvisor and the space at the front of the helmet that is used to house it, but it may be some comfort to know that it does have a 5 star rating in the UK SHARP testing programme.

HJC release Toni Elias ‘Captain America’ replica helmet

toni elias captain america

Toni Elias HJC Captain America

Remember that Captain America helmet that Toni Elias wore for round 9 and 10 of the AMA MotoAmerica Superbike round at the Road America circuit in Wisconsin? Well HJC have now just made it available as a replica in their HJC CL-17 range.

The helmet obvioulsy granted Toni Elias some special powers as he charged to another podium finish during the race.

This isn’t the first time that Captain America has been used for racing inspiration – Jorge Lorenzo famously wore a Captain America helmet in 2009 for the Indianapolis MotoGP race, and to be honest this version that Toni Elias wore isn’t that different. It’s a blue colour scheme with a white ‘A’ on the front and white wings on the sides. Like Lorenzo’s helmet it also features an image of Captain America’s iconic shield on the rear.

Where can I get it?
The HJC CL-17 is very affordable coming in well under $200. Check out the full details including where you can buy it on our full detail page for this helmet HERE

HJC have struck a deal with Marvel that has seen them release a couple of other designs based on famous characters from the Marvel universe so if Captain America isn’t your thing, then you can also get nice looking Iron Man and the Punisher helmet designs, check them out below:

If you are looking to pick up the Captain America, Iron Man, or The Punisher helmets then most stock seems to be in the USA, so check out or for stock (both also ship globally)

First look at new Jorge Lorenzo HJC helmet

Jorge Lorenzo HJC Helmet

A few weeks ago we wrote about the news that Jorge Lorenzo had left Nolan/X-Lite helmets and had signed a new contract with HJC, and would race in an HJC RPHA 10 helmet.

The first images of what Lorenzo’s new MotoGP race helmet will look like have now been released by HJC.

The graphics are not a huge departure from Lorenzo’s previous design – the top of the lid still features his ‘around the outside’ logo of a red X in a white circle, and the rear still features his winged sparta helmet motif.

The main difference is the addition of the Monster Energy claw logo – the Monster Energy team will be sponsoring both Rossi and Lorenzo in the Yamaha team and as a result Lorenzo has been bought out of his previous contract with Rockstar Energy drinks.

New replica’s of Lorenzo’s new HJC helmet are due to be available for sale by spring 2013

Jorge Lorenzo moves to HJC Helmets

Jorge Lorenzo
Jorge Lorenzo has announced that he has signed a helmet sponsorship deal with HJC helmets.

Lorenzo had previously been racing with X-Lite helmets, but at a recent Nolan Helmets Christmas event it was announced that Lorenzo would be moving to another manufacturer. Nolan presented Lorenzo with a commemorative helmet to pay tribute to the years and the success that he has had whilst wearing X-Lite helmets.

George Hong, the President of HJC Helmets for America said:
“We are very proud to sign Jorge Lorenzo for the 2013 season as well as our other top riders.”

It is said that Lorenzo will wear the HJC RPHA helmet, a model that has previously been worn and had development input from Ben Spies.

It is rumored that HJC will have the first range of HJC Jorge Lorenzo models available for sale by Spring 2013.

More Jorge Lorenzo Helmets.

New Ben Spies MotoGP Helmets for 2011

Now these are slick – HJC have released two new Ben Spies replica MotoGP helmets in their R-PHA range and they are available now.

Plus the good thing about HJC helmets is that are are pretty affordable for race replicas (especially when compared to the AGV or X-lite replica helmets). The Ben Spies design is pretty special too.

There are two versions of the helmet available.

The first one is the ‘HJC R-PHA Ben Spies MotoGP ‘Monster’ Helmet‘.
HJC R-PHA10 Ben Spies 'Monster' MotoGP Helmet This helmet is the same as Ben Spies currently races with in MotoGP.

The design features the large star design at the top of the helmet, and features the ‘Monster Claw’ logo on either side.

The rear features a map of Texas, the number ’11’, and the initials of Ben Spies.

This is a simple but striking design, and design-wise it is probably one of our favourites currently on the MotoGP grid.

A stunning lid. If you want to find out more information about this Ben Spies MotoGP replica helmet, including where you can buy it then check out the Product Page.

The second helmet is a ‘Special Edition’ version of the Ben Spies MotoGP helmet.

HJC R-PHA10 Ben Spies ‘Special Edition’ MotoGP Helmet (2011) This helmet is basically the exact same design as the Ben Spies MotoGP helmet but with a twist.

The design features a bold red background behind the star motif, and the racing numbers on the rear are also in a bold red colour.

RPS-10 Helmets and Ben Spies

Video showing the RPS-10 Helmets and Ben Spies:

HJC Helmets state that Ben Spies brought “the attitude of a winner” to the development of the RPS-10 helmet. “Every RPS-10 bears Ben’s fingerprints,” according to HJC, “as his testing input literally helped form prototype designs into the helmet every rider can now wear.” The Ben Spies Limited Edition Replica RPS-10 will feature his specific graphics, as well as his signature.

“Each prototype was thoroughly evaluated, and with each successive iteration the design was tweaked and reshaped for reduced aerodynamic drag, maximum stability, minimum lift, minimum vibration and noise, and more. Based on these testing results the existing prototype would be revised and a next-generation prototype would then be designed and constructed, and the testing process resumed once again.”
