Valentino Rossi has revealed his MotoGP winter test helmet for 2017-2019 and it is a thing of beauty.

In the last few years Rossi has gone for cartoon designs that have been focused around ‘winter’ and ‘snow’ as an attempt to poke fun at the fact that the first MotoGP pre-season winter tests take place in the extreme heat of Sepang.

This year he teamed up with Aldo Drudi’s design studio to create a stunning helmet design that is based on the folk-art of the Huichol people of Mexico. The Huichol are Native Americans who are indigenous to the Sierra Madre Occidental area in Mexico. They are famous for their yarn art and their colourful beaded art techniques.

Rossi became interested in their beaded art on a recent trip to Mexico and decided to recreate it on his AGV Pista GP R for the winter tests. The usual Rossi themes and symbols are presents, such as the Sun, the Moon, a turtle etc…but all made to look like they were created from hundreds of coloured beads.

Davide Degli Innocenti, the graphics and colouring manager at Drudi Performance, painstakingly painted each individual bead, as you can seen from his instagram video below:

Valentino Rossi explained the new helmet design saying:

“Huichol art immediately intrigued me, because it uses many of my symbols, like the sun and moon or the turtle. We have tried to recreate the effect of the beads that the Mexicans use to bring colour and shape to these objects, but to do so with a Valentino Rossi twist. The helmet looks really good, Aldo Drudi did a great job, as did Davide in particular – hecreated the beads with a brush, one by one. We might say that the helmet has become a work of art, something we’ve never seen before.”

Franco Morbidelli Moto2 World Champion Helmet

Franco Morbidelli Moto2 World Champion Helmet

Franco Morbidelli secured the Moto2 World Championship at the Malaysian GP in Sepang, and this is the helmet design he had painted on to his AGV Pista GP R helmet to celebrate.

Morbidelli secured the 2017 Moto2 crown at the Sepang International Circuit when Tom Luthi, the only other rider with a chance of challenging Morbidelli, was ruled unfit to ride by medical staff after he fractured an ankle in the qualifying session.

Despite securing the title before the race had even started, Morbidelli still had plenty of fight left and he took 3rd position in the race behind Binder and Oliveira.

Morbidelli’s Moto2 championship victory makes him the first Italian racer to win the second-tier title since the late Marco Simoncelli in 2008.

Shortly after the victory Morbidelli revaled his new helmet design which featured a design painted by Aldo Drudi. The helmet had a cartoon Brazilian parrot wearing a crown on the top of the helmet. Morbidelli has raced with this cartoon parrot motif in past races and he had it created as a tribute to his Brazilain heritage (his mother is from Brazil and his father is Italian).

The helmet also feature gold text on the side that reads ‘Campeao mundial‘ (World Champion) and has ‘Che Ritmo‘ written on the rear, which roughly means ‘That Rhythm’.

You get to peer behind the curtain here and see how Aldo Drudi’s studio get those iconic Misano helmets ready for Valentino Rossi.

This is a quick video giving a glimpse into Aldo Drudi’s design studio as the create and prepare Valentino Rossi’s 2016 Misano MotoGP helmet called ‘Sweet Home Misano’ – a design that used the classic movie ‘The Blues Brthers’ as its influence.

Watch the team creating it in this video below:

Luis Salom 2016 AGV Pista GP Mexicano helmet

This is the Luis Salom 2016 Moto2 helmet. Designed by Aldo Drudi on an AGV Pista GP helmet, this is probably one of the most eyecatching helmet designs ever to be seen in Moto2.

The design was an update of Luis Salom’s ‘Mexicano’ helmet from 2015, and the 2016 version had a beautiful blend of pink and blue across the design. A colour scheme like this is pretty rare. The top of the helmet featured an animal skull which is flanked by painted roses and thorns wrapping themselves around the sides of the helmet. The rear features the words ‘Mexicano’.

Luis Salom raced with an AGV Pista GP helmet in Moto2.

Luis Salom was tragically killed in in 2016 when he was involved in a crash at Turn 12 in Barcelona during the Moto2 Free Practice session.

I’d love to see this released as a replica by AGV, it would be a fitting tribute to another talented young racer who lost their life too early in the pursuit of their dreams.
