Marco Melandri biography:
Born in 1982 in Revenna, Italy, Marco Melandri got his first taste of racing from an early age by competing in MiniBikes and then eventually motocross. He graduated quickly to the Italian 125cc Championship before then moving up to the European 125cc Championship. His performances did garnered enough attention to secure him a ride for the Benetton Matteoni Honda Team in the 125cc Grand Prix Championship and Melandri went on to win 2 races, score 8 podiums, and finish his debut season in third place in the overall standings. The following year Melandri improved and finished in second place overall.
Melandri moved to 250cc in 2000 and spent three seasons racing in the series before claiming the 250cc World Title in 2002.
Melandri then moved to MotoGP in 2003 racing for the Fortuna Yamaha team. Melandri went on to spend eight full seasons in MotoGP (with a partial return in 2015) with his best season coming in 2005 where he scored 2 race wins, 7 podiums, and claimed second place in the championship standings.
Melandri moved to World Superbikes in 2011 to race for the Yamaha World Superbike Team and he went on finish in second place in the overall standings, taking 3 race wins along the way. He switched to BMW for the 2012 World Superbike season and impressed once again by finishing in third place in the standings.
