Shoei have released a replica of the helmet design that Marc Marquez first used for the Japanese MotoGP in 2013.
The design chosen to celebrate Honda’s home race at the Twin Ring Motegi Circuit was a unique twist on Marquez’s traditional Ant design. This new design placed Marquez’s famous ‘Ant’ motif in the middle of a red rising sun design, on a white base background. Simple, but effective.
The rest of the helmet is a clean, white design with a blue base running from the chin of the helmet to the rear. Marquez’s racing number ’93’ is placed at the back.
Marquez and Honda meant business at the Japanese MotoGP where this helmet was first revealed – Marquez was in his rookie year of MotoGP and he was already leading the Championship and was looking likely to take the Championship crown in his first season in the premier class. Japan was the penultimate round of the season, and there was a mathametical chance that Marquez could clinch the World Championship if things went their way….something that Honda would take great delight in at their home Grand Prix.
Hoping the Japanese themed design would bring him luck Marquez raced hard and eventually finished second in the 2013 Japanese MotoGP. This wasn’t enough to give him the World Championship, but it put him in a very strong position for the final round that was to follow at Valencia where he tied things up.
Reflecting on the race, Marquez said:
“This was my first time at this track with a MotoGP bike and in practice I was unable to get any references in the dry, leaving me with only the warm up and the race in which to find my way. I saw that Jorge [Lorenzo] was a little stronger than us here and I had a couple of scary moments, making me decide that twenty points and the gap being reduced by only five points would be a decent result. There is only one race remaining – the most important of the year – so we shall try to be more focused than ever at Valencia”
Marc Marquez also came second the following year at Motegi, securing his consecutive MotoGP World Title in the process.
This is a slick and clean looking design that pays tribute to an iconic manufacturer, and a MotoGP racer who was in a rare run of form and was taking the MotoGP paddock by storm in his debut season, breaking numerous records in the process.
