Ben Spies is another modern day motorcycle racing phenomenon who has already achieved what many racers would be happy having a fraction of…..and his career is still in its relative infancy.
Spies began racing in the AMA series and soon found himself competing on a regular basis at the front of the grid against AMA legend Mat Mladin. By 2008, Spies had won his third straight AMA Superbike Championship to become the fourth rider in the history of the series to win the title three consecutive times.
Spies moved to World Superbikes in 2009, and many predicted it would take time for him to learn the new tracks – all of which he had never raced on before. Spies went on to win the Championship in his first (and only season), before moving to MotoGP in 2010 with Tech 3 Yamaha.
Spies adapted quickly to MotoGP and finished as rookie of the year, with a couple of podium finishes to his name. It was announced that for 2011 Spies would be promoted to the factory Yamaha team to replace Valentino Rossi ,as Jorge Lorenzo’s team-mate.
