Jorge Lorenzo ‘Diablo’ helmet (2017)

Jorge Lorenzo Diablo Helmet

Jorge Lorenzo MotoGP Austria 2017

Jorge Lorenzo brought a brand new helmet design to the 2017 Austrian MotoGP – the one-off special design was called ‘Diablo’, which is Spanish for ‘Devil’.

The design was created by Starline Designs, the famous Italian design studio, and they turned the whole of Lorenzo’s helmet into an aggressive looking devil’s head in black and red paint, complete with two yellow eyes glaring out above the visor.

It is a stunning looking design, and it looked incredible on track. It also seemed to give Lorenzo a bit of extra aggression as he scored his best qualifying position so far on a Ducati, and he decisively led the start of the race, and finished in 4th position at the checkered flag.

As always, Lorenzo announced the new helmet design on his Twitter account:

The helmet also reminds us a bit of Darth Maul from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

I can’t imagine that Shark Helmets won’t be planning to release this as a limited edition in a year or so in their premium Shark Race R helmet range, it is too good a design to pass up on, plus the fans will love it.

So watch this space.

Dave Brook is a Bradford born motorcycle racer, and this is a closer look at his helmet design from 2014 that was created by PaintNation.

PaintNation created a custom design over a Shoei XR1100 helmet that was based around a yellow arrow zig-zagging from the chin of the helmet, towards the back, over a white and metallic grey base.

A simple and beautiful looking helmet that really brings this Shoei XR1100 to life.

Andrea Iannone Mugello helmet (2017)

Andrea Iannone Nicky Hayden tribute helmet Mugello 2017

Andrea Iannone Mugello 2017

The Mugello MotoGP always inspires many of the Italian riders to come up with a special one-off helmet design to mark the occasion, and many riders this year are choosing to pay tribute to Nicky Hayden in their designs.

Valentino Rossi used a football design to honour both Francesco Totti (his friend who retired from football) and Nicky Hayden, and Andrea Iannone has used his entire helmet to pay tribute to Hayden.

The design features a blue sky graphic with clouds covering the helmet, with the word ‘Nicky’ written in large letters across the top of the helmet. One side of Iannone’s helmet also features Haydens ’69’ race number, while the other features Iannone’s usual ’29’ race number.

A simple and effective tribute to Nicky Hayden who is greatly missed by the riders and fans alike.

You know the drill by now, every year for the Mugello MotoGP Valentino Rossi produces a new one-off special helmet design to mark the occasion. This year, Valentino Rossi has gone for a football theme with a couple of tribute woven into the design.

This year’s Mugello helmet is a tribute to Rossi’s good friend Francesco Totti who announced his retirement from football. Totti had spent about 26 years at Roma and has just called time on his career. The helmet shows a cartoon of Valentino about to take a penalty on a football pitch, the cartoon Rossi is pictured as saying “Shall I chip it?“. This is a reference to a penalty known as a ‘paneka’ where the player chips it in over the goalkeeper. The rear of the helmet features the Italian flag with the phrase “One captain. There is only one captain” as a tribute to Totti.

The helmet also features a tribute to Nicky Hayden. Hayden sadly lost his life in a cycling incident in Italy and Rossi has merged his famous ’46’ race number with Hayden’s ’69’ race number.

Romano Fenati ‘Red’ helmet (Misano 2012)

Romano Fenati Misano Moto3

Romano Fenati Misano Moto3

In 2012 Romano Fenati wore a brightly coloured red helmet for the 2012 Misano Moto3 GP.

The red helmet, which was pretty much devoid of any sponsorhip logos, was a tribute to the graphics that you see on TV when a rider scores a fastest lap time, which is represented by a red helmet icon next to their name.

It seemed to work well for Fenati who bagged his best qualifying result to date and secured 2nd place on the grid behind pole sitter Antonelli.

Fenati said:

“Finally on first row! I want to thank the mechanics and the red helmet, which brought me luck. This one of the few tracks I already know and where I can fight on the same level as the others. I want to race at the front.”

Okay, so he may have been kicked out of the VR46 Moto3 team part-way through the 2016 Moto3 season for ‘behavioural’ issues, but there isn’t a race fan that didn’t welcome the news that Romano Fenati would be returning to Moto3 in 2017 for the Marinelli Rivacold Snipers team.

Fenati’s race-day attitude and aggression won over many fans, and Moto3 is a more entertaining class with him in it.

This is Fenati’s new 2017 helmet that has been created by Starline Designers.

This is a really nice lid – it is very understated in the design and colour scheme, but it really works in our opinion.

The design is devastatingly simple and understated. A white and silver base with a lattice pattern criss-crossing across the top. The base of the helmet features a silhouette of a town (Fenati’s home town of Ascoli Piceno maybe?), and the rear features a huge silver ‘V’ – the roman numeral for ‘5’, Fenati’s race number.

Andrea Iannone Indy AGV helmet

Andrea Iannone is no stranger to dropping a new special helmet design to pay tribute to a race or a significant event (our favorite was probably the tribute to the Seagull he killed in Australia).

Iannone will usually have a special design for the Mugello Italian MotoGP and he has also adpoted one-off graphics to celebrate the US rounds in MotoGP.

In 2013 when he was racing for the Pramac Ducati team, Iannone and AGV ran a competition for fans to come up with a design for the Indianapolis MotoGP. The winner would see their design get created on Iannone’s Pista GP helmet and used in the race.

The winning design was a beautiful looking ‘Stars and Stripes’ design, which featured the stars at the front of the helmet, with the red and white stripes running across the rear. The top of the lid had a huge silver star, and the chin and sides featured Iannone’s race number.

Marc Marquez 2015 Catalunya

In 2015 Marc Marquez announced a competition – people could go to a web page and create a special helmet design that Marquez would wear during the Catalunya MotoGP.

The competition was open to Spanish fans only, and Marquez himself picked the winner.

It is not the first time a MotoGP rider has allowed fans to design their helmet, Jorge Lorenzo has famously done it a number of times allowing Anna Vives to create special one-off designs for him to wear for Spanish GPs.

The eventual winning design was an incredible multi-coloured mosaic pattern that made the famous Marquez ant logo look like it was made from stained glass. A really beautiful looking helmet.

Despite the stunning new lid, Marquez had a bad race and crashed out while Jorge Lorenzo stormed to victory.

Alvaro Bautista ‘Family’ helmet (Valencia 2013)

Alvaro Bautista Family Helmet

Alvaro Bautista Valencia 2013

Here is a quick look back at Alvaro Bautista’s special helmet design for the 2013 Valencia MotoGP.

Bautista doesn’t hasn’t really had too much screen time in recent years in MotoGP due to the fact that he hasn’t been a top 6 regular for some time, so you may not have seen many images of this helmet, but we love it. Recent performances hint that might be changing a bit in 2017…..we hope so at least.

Anyway, let’s step back to 2013 when Alvaro Bautista pulled some special graphics out of the bag at Valencia to celebrate and pay tribute to his family, including a stork dropping in a new addition.

James Ellison 2016 Monster Energy Shoei X-Spirit 3 helmet

James Ellisons 2016 British Superbikes

This is another beautiful looking James Ellison helmet that was created by PaintNation.

This design is Ellison’s 2016 helmet that he wore for British Superbikes, and the design was created for his Shoei X-Spirit 3 helmet.

The graphics remind us a bit of Cal Crutchlow’s MotoGP helmet, with Ellison’s yellow swooping pattern thatradiats back from the front of the helmet reminiscent of Crutchlow’s green design.

The design also features a Union Jack towards the rear-sides of the helmet and Ellison’s ‘Captain Chaos’ logo is stamped on the back.

As ever, the Paint Nation team have documented the creation of this helmet design with a fascinating video and loads of photos. Check them all out below.
